How do I work?

In my vocal coaching, typically, in the first session we will go through some technical exercises and a song you bring. This in order to find out your wish for the training and to make a plan on how to get there.

I base my teaching upon different teaching styles and techniques, such as the classical Bel Canto style and Complete Vocal Technique (CVT). I am an authorized teacher of CVT, and have studied music pedagogics and musicology at University of Oslo.

I use backing tracks from sites like YouTube when I teach, so great if you know the links to the tracks you want to use :-)

I do also teach the speaking voice.

If you suspect you have vocal health issues please seek medical help before booking voice lessons.

I wish to help you to use and develop your voice in a healthy and expressive way!

I teach both in groups and 1:1. For requests concerning group sessions or IRL lessons (Oslo) please message me on info@mariannevahl.com.

TESTEMONIAL

"I would highly recommend Marianne to anyone interested in improving their singing. I basically started right from scratch, having not sung since I was a little girl. I am now in my early 30´s.

For the past year Marianne has helped me with all the basics of singing, which has in turn improved my voice and increased my range and pitch. Marianne has a very good musical ear, detects my challenges and consequently offers me different options on how to solve them.

Marianne has a very pleasant and positive nature and I have enjoyed every single lesson I have had with her.
I will continue using the things I have learnt from our sessions in my future singing journey.

I have progressed from being ashamed of my voice to someone who can now sing in front of people and actually think I sound pretty good, knowing it will only get better with more practice." Natalia Vatsvåg

My philosophy

Both in my vocal coaching and in my philosophical counseling I take your wishes as my starting point for our training.

You are the expert of your life and of your voice.

I can be a qualified person you can reflect together with - to explore your voice, your potential and your musical ambitions.

My motto is: "Your Voice, Your Way!"

It is not my taste, but your taste and artistic wishes that defines the training.

So what is my background?

About 30 years ago I started training the Italian Bel Canto singing style, and have since been training with some of the leading vocal coaches in the world.

Later I started studying philosophy, and finished my Masters degree in 2008.

I completed the teachers education PPU at the University of Oslo in 2012, with didactic's in music and philosophy. In addition I did a two years training in how to fasilitate philosophical dialogues, and became a Philosophical Practitioner (NSFP).

In 2019 I graduated as an authorized teacher and singer in Complete Vocal Technique.

So, I am trained both as a classical and rhythmical singer. Some of my favorite topics to teach are vocal effects like ornamentation and vibrato, or to work with breathing and relaxation.

I would love to pass some of these amazing techniques on to you!

Even though I like to both sing and teach different musical styles, my main experience is in classical singing.

In 2019 I was a Lidal North artist singing in two concerts in Oslo: "Arie Marathon" and  "Romance Evening". It was an amazing experience to perform with many of my favorite singers :-)

Another highlight was in 2010 when I was invited by WWF to sing at the Bavarian representation in Brussel at the evening dialogue "Make Space for Nature", hosted by the Dutch Princess Laurentien. To contribute at such a meaningful event of great impact was a huge honor - a memory for life.

Here is a video of my performance in Frogner Church (2019) of the aria "Lascia ch'io Pianga" by the composer Händel.

Philosophical Counseling for Performers.

This is a non-academic conversation where you choose the topic.

It is a conversation based upon principles for dialogue stemming back to the Philosopher Socrates.

As a philosophical counselor I can facilitate a diversity of subjects. However, lately I have specialized in dialogues helping performers sorting out artistic issues such as image building, sjanger choices, musical identity, authenticity, stage fright, interpretation and communication issues.

It is an opportunity for you to explore issues relevant for your performance practice.

So, do you want to try?

The conversation will normally be on Zoom, and I use the booking and Journal platform Easy Practice.

PHILOSOPHY AND SINGING!

Some of my favorite moments are when I can combine my passions for singing and philosophy.

I was so lucky to get this opportunity in 2012 in South Korea at a philosophy conference.

There I presented the paper "Philosophical Practice and the Human Voice", and combined the speech with singing two songs relevant for the article. The paper was later published in Journal of the APPA, and you can read it here..
